What is it?
VATS (Vehicle Anti-Theft System), also called PassKey, is GM's resistor-based anti-theft system used from 1986-2005. The ignition key has a resistor pellet that must match one of 15 resistance values. The system reads the resistance and allows starting only if correct.
Why Does It Fail?
The VATS sensor in the ignition cylinder wears out from repeated key insertions. Corrosion, broken wires in the steering column, and failed VATS modules are also common. After 15-20 years, these systems become unreliable and cause no-start conditions.
