BMW Key System Decoder
The single most useful thing a BMW owner can know before calling about a key is not the model. It is the chassis code — E90, F30, G20 — because that letter and number tell a specialist exactly which security module they are dealing with, and that determines whether your key is a $150 job or a $1,100 one.
As of July 2026 in the DFW market, a BMW key ranges from $150–$300 for a straightforward reprogram on an older E-series to $750–$1,100 for an all-keys-lost on an F-series requiring a bench ISN read. Same badge. Same "BMW key replacement." Seven times the price. The difference is entirely architectural.
This is a reference guide, not a sales page. Use the tables to identify your platform, then you can have an informed conversation with anyone you call — including the dealer.
How to find your chassis code in 30 seconds
Three reliable methods, easiest first:
- The VIN decoder route. Your VIN is at the base of the windshield on the driver's side and on the door jamb sticker. Positions 4 through 7 encode the model and body. Any free BMW VIN decoder will return the chassis code from that.
- The build plate. Open the driver's door and look at the B-pillar sticker — many markets print the type designation there.
- The generation-by-year table below. Least precise, because BMW overlaps generations during changeover years, but good enough to narrow it to two candidates.
If you land between two chassis codes on a changeover year, that is exactly the case where the VIN matters. A 2013 3 Series could be an E90 or an F30 depending on build date, and those two cars need completely different work.
The five BMW security generations
BMW has run five distinct immobilizer architectures since the mid-1990s. Everything else is variation within these.
EWS (1995–2006)
The Elektronische Wegfahrsperre was BMW's first transponder system. A blade key with an embedded chip talks to an EWS module, which talks to the DME. Straightforward by modern standards.
Found on: E36, E38, E39, E46, E53, Z3, early E60/E63 Key format: Cut blade, transponder chip, optional remote head All-keys-lost difficulty: Moderate. The EWS module can be read and a new key aligned, but the DME and EWS are paired, so mismatches cause no-start conditions that look like ignition faults.
CAS1 and CAS2 (2003–2008)
Car Access System replaced EWS and moved the key into the now-familiar rounded fob with a slot-insert. CAS also took over comfort functions, which means a CAS fault presents as more than a no-start.
Found on: E60, E61, E63, E64, E65, E66, E70, E90, E91, E92, E93 (early builds) Key format: Slot-insert fob with transponder All-keys-lost difficulty: Moderate to high. Some CAS2 variants require the module to be read directly rather than through the diagnostic port.
CAS3 and CAS3+ (2007–2013)
The workhorse generation, and the one most often misidentified. CAS3 introduced encrypted key data; the CAS3+ revision added a further protection layer that defeats older tooling entirely. Two cars a year apart can behave completely differently.
Found on: E70, E71, E82, E88, E89, E90, E91, E92, E93, E60 (late), F01/F02 (early) Key format: Slot-insert fob, later comfort-access proximity on some models All-keys-lost difficulty: High on CAS3+. This is the generation where a shop either has current tooling or genuinely cannot do the job.
FEM and BDC (2011–2019)
The Front Electronic Module and its successor the Body Domain Controller consolidated body electronics and immobilizer authority into one unit. Critically, the key credential is derived from an ISN — an internal serial number — that generally has to be read off the module itself, frequently with the module removed and bench-mounted.
Found on: F20, F21, F22, F30, F31, F32, F33, F34, F36, F15, F16, F25, F26, F45, F46, F48 Key format: Proximity fob, some with the colour-screen Display Key All-keys-lost difficulty: High. This is the $750–$1,100 band, and the reason is labour: module out, bench read, module back in, then OBD pairing.
BDC2 and later (2018–2026)
The current generation on G-series cars, with a security gateway that restricts diagnostic access far more aggressively than anything before it. Some model years and markets have no independent access path at all.
Found on: G20, G21, G22, G23, G30, G31, G05, G06, G07, G01, G02, G29 Key format: Proximity fob, Digital Key / phone-as-key on later builds All-keys-lost difficulty: Varies sharply by year. This is the one platform where "you need the dealer" is sometimes the honest answer, and any specialist worth calling will tell you that on the phone.

The failure modes that get misdiagnosed as key problems
A meaningful share of "my BMW key stopped working" calls are not key problems at all. Knowing the difference saves you from buying a key you did not need.
FRM module failure (E-series). The Footwell Module controls lighting and door functions. When it corrupts, windows and mirrors stop responding and the car can present oddly at startup. CAS losing sync with the fob. The rolling code between fob and CAS can drift out of alignment. The car does not recognise the fob for entry, or recognises it intermittently. Resynchronisation is far cheaper than replacement.

Comfort Access receiver failure. Push-button start cars with proximity entry have antennas and a receiver. When those fail the fob works for nothing while being perfectly healthy.
A flat fob battery pretending to be worse. It happens constantly. Before authorising anything, try the emergency blade hidden inside the fob and the backup start position — most BMWs have a defined procedure for a dead fob that does not require a locksmith at all. A competent diagnostic separates these before selling you a key. If a shop quotes an all-keys-lost price before asking whether the car currently starts, that is the wrong shop.

What to do while you still have one key
The cheapest moment in the entire lifecycle of a BMW key is right now, assuming the car currently starts.
The platform tables above make the reason concrete. On an EWS-era E46 the gap between a spare and an all-keys-lost is a couple of hundred dollars — annoying, survivable. On an F-series car it is the difference between a $450–$750 appointment in your driveway and a $750–$1,100 job that involves pulling the FEM or BDC module out of the dashboard. On a late G-series car with a locked security gateway, it can be the difference between a routine booking and having no independent option at all.
Two practical notes specific to BMW:
Comfort Access fobs degrade quietly. The proximity function typically weakens before the transponder does, so a fob that has started feeling unreliable for keyless entry is often signalling a battery or board issue well before it fails to start the car. That is a good moment to cut the spare, not a reason to panic.
A spare without remote functions is a legitimate option. Questions to ask a BMW key shop
Five, and the answers tell you everything:
- "What chassis code is my car, and what security module does that use?" If they cannot answer from your VIN, they have not looked.
- "Do you have current tooling for CAS3+ / FEM ISN reads?" The honest answer is sometimes no. Better to hear it now.
- "Does the module have to come out?" For F-series all-keys-lost, usually yes, and they should say so unprompted along with what that means for time.
- "Is this an add-key or an all-keys-lost?" They should establish whether a working key exists before quoting a single number.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find out which key system my BMW has?
Decode your VIN to get the chassis code — positions 4 through 7 identify the model and body. E36 through E53 use EWS, E60 through E93 use CAS1 through CAS3+, F-series cars use FEM or BDC, and G-series cars use BDC2. The chassis code, not the model name, determines the work required.
Why does a BMW F-series key cost so much more than an E-series key?
Because the security credential lives in an ISN that generally has to be read directly off the FEM or BDC module, often with the module removed and bench-mounted, rather than retrieved through the diagnostic port. Can any locksmith program a BMW key?
No. CAS3+ and FEM/BDC platforms require current, specific tooling and — for all-keys-lost — bench module capability. Plenty of general locksmiths handle EWS and early CAS cars and refer the rest out. Ask directly which platforms a shop supports before booking.
My BMW key works for the door but will not start the car. Is that a key problem?
Usually not. If the remote functions still operate, the fob is transmitting and its battery is fine, so the failure is on the transponder or immobilizer side — a CAS sync issue, an antenna ring fault, or on older cars a DME-to-EWS pairing problem. Those are diagnostic jobs, not key-replacement jobs.
Is a Display Key different to program?
The Display Key adds a rechargeable screen fob on top of the standard credential. The immobilizer side is the same as the platform it sits on, but the display unit itself has its own pairing step and is a significantly more expensive part. If you only need a working key, a conventional fob for the same car is the cheaper path.
Does my BMW have to go to the dealer for a key?
For most E-series and F-series cars, no — the work can be done where the car sits, including all-keys-lost. Later G-series builds with a locked-down security gateway are the genuine exception, and there the dealer may be the only path. A straight shop will tell you which category your VIN falls into before dispatch.
How long does BMW key programming take on-site?
An add-a-key on an E-series car is typically 30–60 minutes. An F-series all-keys-lost requiring an ISN read runs 60–120 minutes because the module comes out, goes on the bench, and goes back in before OBD pairing. Neither requires a tow or a shop appointment.
