As of August 2026, the difference between an aftermarket key and a manufacturer-original one in the DFW market is roughly $40 to $180 on the blank itself, and the programming labour on top is usually identical. On a 2014 Camry that difference is free money and the aftermarket key is the sensible choice. On a 2021 Audi it is not a choice at all, because the car will not accept one.

The trap is that both statements are true at the same time, so generic advice in either direction is wrong about half the vehicles on the road. What follows is the split that actually matters: which platforms tolerate aftermarket keys well, which tolerate them conditionally, which reject them outright, and — the part nobody mentions on the listing page — the four ways a cheap fob fails quietly, months after it programmed perfectly.

What "aftermarket" actually covers

The word is doing far too much work. There are three genuinely different products sold under it.

Quality aftermarket. Manufactured by established suppliers to reproduce the original's electronics with correct chip families, proper shielding and decent injection moulding. Often made in the same regions and to similar tolerances as the original. These behave like OEM keys and last like them.

Budget aftermarket. Functional electronics in a cheaper package. The chip may be a compatible clone rather than the specified part, the case tolerances looser, the button membranes thinner. Programmes fine. Fails earlier and less predictably.

OEM refurbished or used. A genuine manufacturer key that has been reset, or a used one that has never been paired. On platforms that allow key reset this is often the best value available — genuine hardware at aftermarket money. On platforms that lock a key to a vehicle permanently, it is worthless.

A shop that says "we can do aftermarket" without distinguishing between those three is describing a price point rather than a part. The question worth asking is which supplier and whether the chip is the specified family or a clone.

The pattern is chronological as much as geographic. Older platforms authenticate the chip; newer ones authenticate the key as a component of the vehicle. Once a manufacturer moves to the second model — component protection on VW Group, the module-bound key data on BMW, the EIS relationship on Mercedes — aftermarket stops being a value question and becomes a compatibility one.

The four ways a cheap fob fails later

This is the part that never appears in a product review, because reviews are written the week the key arrives and these failures arrive in month four.

1. Button membrane collapse. The rubber or conductive contact under the buttons wears through. Lock stops working, then unlock becomes intermittent. The transponder is unaffected, so the car still starts — which is why owners live with it for months and then discover the fob is not worth reprogramming when they finally replace it.

2. Battery-contact corrosion and drain. Poor contact plating corrodes in a hot, humid climate, and the DFW summer is unkind to a key that lives in a pocket or a hot car. Symptoms are erratic: the fob works at two feet and not at ten, or works in the morning and not the evening. Owners replace the battery repeatedly before realising the contacts are the problem.

3. Case cracking at the blade or ring. Looser moulding tolerances and cheaper plastic split where the emergency blade seats or where the keyring hole takes years of load. Once the case cracks, the board flexes, and the failures become intermittent in ways that are extremely hard to diagnose.

4. The clone chip that drifts. The least common and the most annoying. A chip that is compatible rather than specified may authenticate reliably at first and become marginal as it ages or as ambient conditions change. The car starts nine times and fails the tenth, usually in a car park, usually with no code stored to explain it.

None of these are arguments against aftermarket keys as a category. They are arguments against the cheapest listing on the page, which is a different thing. A quality aftermarket key from a known supplier fails no more often than an original.

What this does to the real cost

The blank is not the job. Programming labour is the same whether the key came from a dealer parts counter or a box in the van, which means the aftermarket saving is bounded by the blank price alone.

Against the ranges in our DFW car key replacement cost index, that produces a fairly consistent picture:

  • Domestic and Japanese transponder keys ($150–$250 as a spare). Aftermarket typically saves $30–$70 of that. Worth taking on a quality blank.
  • Domestic and Japanese smart keys ($200–$400 as a spare). Aftermarket can save $60–$150. Worth taking, with supplier care.
  • European luxury. Usually no aftermarket option, so the question does not arise.

Now put the failure modes against those numbers. Saving $50 on a fob that needs replacing in eighteen months costs you the second programming session, and the programming was always the larger half of the bill. That is the entire economic argument in one sentence: aftermarket is worth it when the blank is good, and never worth it when the saving is achieved by making the blank worse.

There is one case where the calculation changes completely. If you are buying a spare while your original still works, the stakes are low — a spare that fails in two years is an inconvenience you discover at leisure. How to tell a good blank from a bad one

Before it is programmed, five things are checkable.

The chip family, stated explicitly. A reputable listing or supplier will name it. Vagueness here is the strongest single warning sign.

Case fit and weight. A quality blank feels close to the original in the hand. Rattling halves, visible seams and a suspiciously light weight all indicate the moulding standard.

Battery contact plating. Bright, evenly plated contacts rather than dull stamped metal. This is the component most likely to cause a mysterious failure in a Texas summer.

A warranty that mentions the electronics. Thirty days on "defects" is not a warranty on a key that will be in service for a decade.

A shop that programmes customer-supplied fobs regularly will look at yours and tell you honestly whether it is worth the programming session. That opinion is free and worth more than the review score on the listing.

When the fob is not the problem at all

Worth stating plainly, because it accounts for a large share of "my aftermarket key stopped working" calls: sometimes the key is fine.

A failing antenna ring around the ignition, a weak vehicle battery producing low voltage during cranking, a body module with a supply fault, or a lost registration after a jump start all present as key failure. The tell is usually that a second key behaves the same way. If both your keys are unreliable, the fault is on the vehicle side.

Quality aftermarket fobs from established suppliers perform and last essentially like originals, and on mainstream Japanese and domestic vehicles they are a sensible way to save $30–$150 on the blank. The problem is the bottom of the market, where savings come from a clone chip instead of the specified one, thinner button membranes, cheaper battery contacts and looser case moulding. The category is fine; the cheapest listing usually is not.

Which cars won't accept an aftermarket key?

Mercedes-Benz effectively requires genuine keys because the key is tied to the EIS/EZS module. BMW keys are bound to the module generation and aftermarket support is poor. Newer Audi and VW models with component protection generally reject non-genuine keys. Nissan, Infiniti, Hyundai and Kia are mixed depending on platform and year. Older Toyota, Honda, Ford, GM and Chrysler products are generally well supported.

Does an aftermarket fob cost less to programme?

No. Programming labour is the same regardless of where the blank came from, which means the entire saving is the price of the blank. That is why a cheap fob that fails in eighteen months usually costs more overall than a good one — the second programming session wipes out the original saving and then some.

Why did my aftermarket key stop working after a few months?

The four common causes are button-membrane wear, corroded or poorly plated battery contacts, a cracked case flexing the circuit board, and a compatible-rather-than-specified chip becoming marginal with age. The first three affect only the remote functions, so the car still starts; the fourth produces intermittent no-starts with no stored fault code. Before blaming the key, check whether your other key behaves the same way — if it does, the fault is in the vehicle.

Can I buy my own fob and have a locksmith programme it?

Many shops will, and it is a legitimate way to save money. Send your VIN and a photo of your existing key before ordering so the FCC ID and chip family are verified, and expect the shop to inspect the blank before committing to a session. Some shops decline customer-supplied parts because they cannot warrant them — that is a reasonable policy rather than a sales tactic, and it is worth asking about on the phone.

How long should a key fob last?

A quality fob typically gives most of a decade of daily service, with a coin battery replacement every two to four years and eventual button wear as the first real symptom. Heat is the main enemy in Texas: a key left on a dashboard in July ages far faster than one that lives in a pocket. If a fob is failing inside two years, it was either a poor blank or the vehicle side of the system needs looking at.
