Why Land Rover keys behave differently from other European makes
One structural fact explains most of it: on Land Rover, the key table generally lives in a body module rather than in the ignition switch. Depending on generation that is the body control module, the RFA (radio frequency antenna) module, or the KVM (keyless vehicle module).

What changes at each boundary
The 2013–2014 boundary: bladed to proximity
This is the biggest single break in the range. Before it, most Land Rovers use a bladed or remote-head key with a conventional transponder and a body control module that is comparatively approachable. After it, you are dealing with proximity smart keys, a dedicated RFA or KVM module, and coding steps that are not optional.
Practically: an L322 Range Rover or an LR4 is a straightforward job for an equipped shop. An L405 or L494 is a coding job that happens to involve a key.
The 2018-onward boundary: security gateways
From roughly 2018, Land Rover joined the rest of the European industry in routing diagnostic traffic through a gateway that expects an authenticated request before permitting security-relevant work. On platforms and model years where an independent access path exists, key programming proceeds normally. Where it does not, the dealer is the only route.

All-keys-lost: where the real cost sits
With a working key, the job is authentication and writing a second credential. Without one, the security relationship has to be re-established through the module that owns it — which on later platforms means a full immobilizer rebuild pairing the body module and the engine controller. That work runs $500–$900 mobile against $1,200–$2,000 plus a tow at the dealer.

Faults that look like key problems on this make
Land Rovers produce several complaints that owners reasonably interpret as a dead key and which a new key will not fix.
Smart key not found. The message appears on both Land Rover and Jaguar vehicles and is as often an antenna or body-module fault as a key fault, particularly when it is intermittent or appears in specific locations. Weak vehicle battery. Land Rovers are notably sensitive to marginal battery voltage and produce module and keyless faults that disappear entirely when the battery is replaced. Rule it out before authorising anything.

What a Land Rover key appointment actually looks like
With a working key. Typically 45–90 minutes at the vehicle. The technician authenticates with your existing key, cuts the blade if the platform uses one, and writes the new credential into the module that holds the key table. Older keys can be deleted at the same time, which is worth doing on a used purchase.
Without any key. Longer, and platform-dependent. On pre-gateway vehicles the work happens on site. On later platforms it depends on the access path, and on some it involves the module directly. Expect the shop to ask for the VIN before committing to a time.
After a module replacement. Coding is mandatory, not optional. A body module or KVM installed without coding will not recognise your existing keys, which is how owners end up paying for a key job they did not expect. Budget $300–$600 for coding with existing fobs, more on L460.

Buying a used Land Rover? Rewrite the key set.
If you have just bought one, you have no way of knowing how many keys exist for it. A previous owner, a previous dealer, or a previous specialist may hold a working credential.
