Intermittent No-Start on a European Car
The intermittent no-start is the worst fault a car can have, and not because it is the most expensive. It is the worst because it is the easiest one to get wrong. A car that never starts gets diagnosed correctly, because the evidence is sitting right there. A car that starts nine times out of ten gets three parts thrown at it by three different shops, and the owner pays for all three before somebody finds the loose ground.
On European cars in particular, intermittent no-starts cluster into a small number of repeatable patterns. First, describe the fault precisely
Before any tool comes out, the pattern itself narrows the field more than most owners realise. Work out which of these you have:
- Does it crank? A car that cranks vigorously and does not fire is a different problem from a car that does nothing when you press the button. This single distinction eliminates roughly half the list below.
- Is there a pattern in time? Only when hot. Only after it has sat overnight. Only in the rain. Only in the afternoon. Intermittent faults that track temperature are usually solder, connectors or a heat-sensitive component; ones that track moisture are usually water ingress.
- Does the dash behave normally? A cluster that lights up fully and then goes dark is telling you about voltage. A cluster that stays lit while nothing happens is telling you about authorisation.
- Does a second key behave differently? If one key fails and another never does, you have narrowed it to the key in two minutes at no cost.
- What changed recently? A battery, a jump start, a module, a windscreen, a stereo, a body repair, a period of sitting unused. European electrical faults overwhelmingly follow an event.
Write the answers down. A shop that gets those five facts at the kerb starts three steps up the ladder.
Rung 1 — Voltage, and everything voltage touches
This is where the majority of intermittent European no-starts actually live, and it is the rung people skip because it feels too simple for an expensive car.
A battery that reads fine at rest can collapse under crank load. A battery nearing the end of its life produces exactly this symptom set: works in the morning, refuses after a short-trip day, recovers overnight. On BMW and Mercedes especially, a marginal battery does not simply fail to turn the engine — it drags system voltage low enough that modules misbehave, throw unrelated faults, and refuse to authorise a start that they would authorise at 12.6 volts.
Beyond the battery itself: corroded or loose grounds, a battery sensor that has failed, and the special case of a battery that was replaced without being registered to the car. Skip this rung at your peril. Every module repair performed on a car with an underlying voltage problem fails again, and the second failure gets blamed on the repair.
Rung 2 — The key, and only the key
If the fault follows one key and not another, stop here.
Inside a European fob there are two separate systems that owners routinely conflate. The remote — battery-powered radio, unlocks doors — and the transponder, which is passive and answers the car's challenge at the ignition or the start button. A fob that still unlocks the doors proves the battery is good and proves nothing whatsoever about the transponder.
Intermittent key faults look like this: it works if you hold it in a particular place, it works on the second or third press, it works when the fob is fresh out of your pocket but not from the cupholder. Any of those is a range or a read problem — a weakening transponder, a cracked solder joint inside the fob after a drop, or a reader coil on the car's side that is failing. What it costs: if it genuinely is the key and a working original exists, a spare runs $150–$300 on an E-series BMW, $200–$450 on Audi and VW, and $300–$600 on Mercedes. Those are all far below the all-keys-lost equivalents, which is the whole argument for sorting it out while the car still starts most of the time.
Rung 3 — The reader side of the car
If both keys behave the same way, the fault has moved to the vehicle.
The car reads the transponder through an antenna — a coil around the ignition barrel on older cars, an antenna near the start button or in the console on keyless ones. Those coils fail, their wiring chafes, and their connectors corrode. The symptom is a perfect no-start with a perfectly good key: the car is not rejecting your credential, it never heard it.
Two cheap and genuinely common sub-cases worth checking before anyone opens the dashboard. First, interference: a second transponder key on the same ring, a transit card, a phone with a wallet case, or an aftermarket immobiliser can all confuse the read. Try the key alone. Second, on cars with a slot or barrel, physical debris — this fixes more no-starts than any module ever will.
What it costs: diagnosis $90–$150; the repair depends on whether the coil, the wiring or the connector is the failure, and it is priced after the read rather than before.
Rung 4 — The module that holds the authorisation
Now we are into the specialist territory, and the module varies by make.
Mercedes — the EIS/EZS. The electronic ignition switch is where key data and start authorisation live. Its classic failure is precisely intermittent: works cold, refuses hot; works most days, refuses on the day you need it. Mercedes — the ESL/ELV steering lock. The other half of the Mercedes intermittent no-start. The steering lock is a motorised mechanism that must release before the car will start, and when it begins to fail it does so intermittently first. The tell is that the steering wheel stays locked, or the dash complains about the steering lock. BMW — CAS, FEM or BDC. The immobilizer's home, depending on chassis generation. A failing one produces a no-start with a good key, often with a scatter of unrelated faults alongside. Audi and VW — the immobilizer chain and component protection. Here the intermittent version is often a connection or a data issue inside a chain that spans more than one module. Rung 5 — Water, heat and physical damage
If the fault tracks weather, look for water. Scuttle drains, windscreen seals, sunroof drains and door membranes all dump water onto places manufacturers put modules, and a damp module is an intermittent module long before it is a dead one. Corrosion on a connector produces exactly the same symptom as a failing board and costs a fraction to fix — if somebody looks.
If the fault tracks temperature, look for solder and connectors. A cracked joint that opens at operating temperature and closes cold is one of the classic intermittent causes, and it is repairable at board level rather than replaceable.

Rung 6 — It is not the immobilizer at all
Worth saying plainly, because a key-and-module specialist telling you this is more credible than a generic shop: a no-start can be a starter, a fuel pump, a crank sensor, an ignition switch contact block or a neutral safety switch, and none of those are our department. The way you tell is the read at rung one. A car whose immobilizer chain is authorising normally and still will not fire is a mechanical or fuelling problem, and the right answer is a good independent European mechanic, not us.
We say so when that is the answer. A diagnostic that ends "your security system is healthy, take it to a mechanic and show them this" is a successful diagnostic.
When to stop and call somebody
Call once any of these is true:
- The fault has left you stranded even once. Intermittent faults become permanent, always, and they choose the moment.
- You have replaced one part and the symptom came back.
- The car is your only vehicle and the pattern is getting more frequent.
- The dash has shown an immobilizer, steering lock or start-error message, even briefly.
- You have one key. An intermittent key fault on a single-key car is a countdown — a spare made now is a fraction of the all-keys-lost price.
What not to do: do not buy a key because the internet says it is the key, and do not buy a module because a code reader named one. Codes name the module that complained, not the module that failed — a low-voltage event makes half the car complain at once.

No. The remote and the transponder are separate systems inside one fob. A working remote proves only that the fob's battery is good. The transponder is passive and answers the car at the ignition or start button, and it can fail — or be out of range of a failing reader coil — while the remote still works perfectly.
How do I tell whether it is the key or the car?
Try your other key. If the fault follows one key and not the other, it is that key. If both keys behave identically, the fault is on the vehicle side — reader coil, wiring, or the module holding the authorisation. That one test costs nothing and eliminates a whole branch of the diagnosis.
